They aren’t clear on who they help.

They aren’t clear on what they are passionate about, what their message is.

Today, I’ll show you exactly how to get crystal clear on your audience and what that can do for your business.

Passionate clarity.

Think about what that means.

It’s being clear on what you are passionate about.

And today I want to share an excerpt from step one.

Step one is clarify who you help.

Clarify who you help.

And it’s all about getting clarity on who you serve and how to best serve them.

How to get what McManus calls that passionate clarity, right?

So there’s three questions that are in this chapter that are going to lead you to this clarity, and I walk you through in the book how answering each of them has helped others, including me, to get this clarity.

In the next episode, I’m going to walk you through creating your ideal customer avatar, your ICA, something that we talked about throughout the book.

It’s like one of those things, if you don’t do this, if you don’t develop the right ideal customer avatar, the rest of the book is irrelevant.

Because the key to clarifying who you help is to be intentional.

You get to choose who you help.

You get to choose who your audience is.

You get to define them in the clearest possible terms.

You get to define who your tribe really is and who they aren’t.

And remember what I said in the last episode.

If you try to serve everyone, you end up serving no one.

If you try to reach everyone with a muddy, unclear message, you end up reaching no one.

That was my mistake for years, and it cost me big time, right?

So once I got absolute clarity on who I served and how I served them, my business began to grow.

As I mentioned in the last episode, the book itself, we got a professional narrator who I love.

I said in the last episode, I’ve read at least four of his audiobooks just

in the last eight, nine months.

Listen to, I should say, absolutely amazing.

So my publisher sent me the guy who’s like, we think we found the guy.

His name is Kyle Tate.

And I’m like, okay, what about him?

And I’m like, well, listen to this.

As soon as I heard, oh, my gosh, I know this guy’s.

And so I’m like, Wait, I was racking my brain, and I had to look him up.

I looked him up on Audible, and I was like, oh, yeah, it’s the guy from

Hogan and a bunch of other books that I have actually read.

I was like, that’s awesome.

So with that said, I’m going to jump right in and you’re going to hear from me, reading from step one of the book, get clear on who you help.

STEP ONE: CLARIFY WHO YOU HELP

When I first started my personal platform at mattmcwilliams.com,

I was not teaching people about online business. I started a blog about leadership and personal development.

Why?

Because I thought that’s where the audience (and therefore the money) was.

I was determined to be the next Tony Robbins, Zig Ziglar, or Les Brown.

So I started writing a daily blog about leadership, mindset, personal growth, and occasionally advice for small business owners.

I was passionate about what I was doing.

I’m a self confessed personal growth junkie, but coming up with content on a daily basis was a challenge.

The reality is that I wasn’t much of an expert at any of the topics I was blogging about.

The amount of research that went into each blog topic usually took longer than the writing itself, and planning ahead more than a few blog post was impossible because I didn’t have a clear vision of what my audience needed or how I could help them.

As a result, while I quickly grew my email list to about 2000 people in a matter of just a few months, it stagnated there for years.

I’ll share more in step four about how I grew my list so quickly, because this is important.

If I chosen a better topic, I would have grown it quickly and continue to grow it every day after.

When I got clarity a few years later, I had another inflection point in my list grew from barely 20 people to more than 160 plus in just a few months.

It was during this two year stagnation period that I discovered my real passion.

I clarified who I helped.

I thought my passion was teaching leadership and personal development.

I thought my goal was to be the next Tony zig or less.

But it wasn’t that at all.

Up to that point, I’d spent more than a decade helping entrepreneurs scale their businesses, helping creatives monetize their passions, and helping ordinary people in every conceivable niche turn their message into a successful, profitable, fulltime business.

The people in my audience kept coming to me to learn how to do those things.

What I found as I went along was that people kept asking me for assistance with their online businesses.

And I discovered that my real passion was helping people to start monetizing their platform, or taking a business that was making a couple hundred bucks a month to making a few thousand, or helping someone who was making $5,000 a month to make ten 00:200 or more.

I loved helping them go from part time to fulltime with their passion and purpose.

But my platform didn’t reflect that.

And as a result, it suffered.

And I suffered from a lack of growth and became frustrated from the inability to take my business full time.

Every week I would see that I had the same number of subscribers. I was frustrated.

I wasn’t even doing what I was able to coach others to do.

That’s when I decided to get clear about my passion and get clear about who I could help.

I’d like to say that it was a flash of brilliance and that decision to completely shift my platform topics was immediate, but it wasn’t.

In fact, it took nearly a year of thinking and reflecting and discussing with others to finally make the leap.

But I did in February 2015, and I haven’t looked back.

Today, I’m 100% crystal clear on my passion and who I help.

I help content creators, people with a message or an expertise to spread that message to more people and build a profitable business around it.

Your passion is trying to tell you something.

For me, getting clear on my passion and who I help was easy.

People been telling me for a decade that I needed to teach this stuff, but I resisted.

I felt that teaching online marketing was no way to change the world.

I wanted to do something big and leave a lasting legacy.

I wanted to change the lives of millions of people around the globe and be known for doing just that.

People kept telling me that I needed to teach what I knew.

At the time, it was primarily affiliate marketing, which is when you refer business to someone else and you’re rewarded for that referral.

The seller provides you with a unique tracking link so that sales are credited to you.

The seller makes money and you make money, and I’ll share more about what that is and how to use it in step nine.

At that time, I’d won every affiliate management award you could win multiple times.

I’d worked with more than 300,000 entrepreneurs.

I was known around the world as the Affiliate Guy.

People knew my reputation as an expert in affiliate marketing and affiliate management, but I didn’t want to be the affiliate guy.

I wanted to do something bigger and change the world.

In the grand scheme of things, teaching people how to make a few bucks or even a lot of bucks from their website didn’t seem like a lofty enough goal.

But I loved helping people monetize their passions.

I love helping aspiring entrepreneurs go full time and seeing the impact they can make with their businesses.

It took a few years, but one night I suddenly realized teaching people something seemingly inconsequential, like how to do

affiliate marketing, could change the world the moment it all made sense.

One night, we had a great bedtime as a family.

It was peaceful, fun and efficient.

The kids did as they were told.

We had a great time reading and praying as a family.

They brushed their teeth without objection, went to the bathroom one last time without argument, and gave me the best hugs and kisses.

Life was good.

As I walked down the stairs to spend some time with my wife Tara, something hit me.

I stood halfway down the stairs for a moment and couldn’t move.

The thought occurred to me that right now, hundreds of other families were experiencing the same thing, all because I taught some people how to get better at affiliate marketing.

Wow…!

You see, a few months before, I’d helped a friend, Dana Abraham, with her course launch.

She helps parents whose lives and children are a bit, shall we say, chaotic.

I helped coach her affiliates.

These are people promoting her course as affiliates.

I shared some strategies with them to maximize their sales, help them plan their promotions, and shared my decade plus of experience with them.

Now, to me, what I was sharing was basic information, but to them, it was mindblowing, next level stuff.

One affiliate who made zero sales the previous launch had more than 20 sales.

Another quadrupled her sales from launch to launch.

Another set a goal of five sales and ended up with more than 40.

It was the number two affiliate in the whole launch.

One affiliate who I remember distinctly told me she’d set an ambitious goal of two sales and ended up with 14.

She was over the moon.

My first thought when I heard those stories was to think of the impact for the entrepreneurs making an extra thousand dollars, $5,000, or even $10,000 plus for some of them, they made more in a two week affiliate promotion than they made an entire month.

One made more than she’d made the entire previous year.

But on this night, standing in the middle of our stairs, I wasn’t thinking of them.

I was thinking of the families.

Hundreds of families were experiencing a peaceful and productive bedtime.

Because I taught some people affiliate marketing, because I was living out my passion and sharing my expertise, I stood there for what seemed like ten minutes it was probably 30 seconds basking in this thought.

And it finally truly clicked with me that changing the world wasn’t a result of massive actions and sharing big ideas.

It was the result of lots of individuals doing what they are called to do.

It was the byproduct of one person helping another person, who helps another person, who in turn helps another person, and so on, each of them doing what they are uniquely qualified, prepared, and called to do.

How to Get Clear on Your Passion for me, deciding what my true passion and purpose was ended up being easy.

I had the credentials and experience to be the affiliate guy with confidence.

But maybe, unlike me, you don’t have the credentials to consider yourself an expert.

That’s okay.

In fact, in the next chapter, I’ll share how you can use your lack of credentials and experience to your advantage.

I’ll show you why you don’t need letters after your name, awards on your shelf, or endorsements from the quote unquote experts to confidently share your message and change the world.

The key in this step is to get clear on your passion and who you help to do that, ask yourself three questions.

You can choose to stop now and answer these questions, or wait until the end of the chapter.

I’ll ask them again in the exercises.

Either way, take the time to think through them and answer them clearly.

Don’t gloss over these questions.

If needed, enlist others to help you answer them honestly and thoroughly.

Sometimes it takes an outside perspective to gain true clarity.

Your friends and your family they might see something in you that you don’t see yourself.

Question One what is it that people are always asking you for help with?

In what areas are you the go to person?

Is there a particular subject on which people are constantly seeking your advice?

Odds are there are one or two things that immediately pop into your mind.

There’s a good chance your true passion and purpose are tied to those topics.

For me, this became obvious when, in a single day, I had three calls with three entrepreneurs, all asking me the same questions.

They had a product launch or a book launch coming up and wanted to know how to start an affiliate program, how to find affiliates, and how to get their affiliates to take action and promote their product or book.

It became even clearer when, just a few weeks later, I was invited to be on a major podcast and the host wanted to talk about affiliate marketing.

Not personal growth, not leadership, not general business.

He wanted me to share with his audience how they could start monetizing their platform with affiliate marketing.

Another few weeks went by, and I was tagged in the comments on a blog I frequented at the time.

This person knew that when I first started my blog, I’d quickly grown my email list from zero to more than 10 subscribers in just a few weeks.

I’d never shared how I did it, but they asked how I wrote a 20 word response that later became our seven day list launch challenge course.

Even though I was creating content around the topics of leadership, personal growth, and general business, very few people were asking me for help in those areas.

They were asking me to help them in three areas growing their email list from scratch, monetizing with affiliate marketing, and starting and scaling their affiliate programs.

That was it.

Once I took a moment to reflect on this question, it was obvious and clear what my real passion was and who I was really meant to serve.

So what is the answer for you?

Maybe people regularly seek you out for your opinion on parenting.

After all, you’ve raised three amazing children in difficult circumstances.

There are likely millions of parents in a similar situation who would love to hear how you did it.

You don’t need letters behind your name or a specialized degree to share your personal experience and the lessons you learned from real life.

My friend jonathan Milligan started a career coaching blog for accounting professionals.

In 2009, he built a moderately successful business and soon actually made enough to go full time with his platform.

But he soon discovered that people were coming to him droves, asking for advice on one thing blogging.

People wanted to know how Jonathan had built and sustained his blog.

They wanted to know what tools he used, what routines he created for writing, how he came up with the content and how he was making money from it.

And it quickly became apparent to Jonathan that he could build a blog and a business around teaching others how to blog.

So he created Blogging Your Passion in 2011 and soon found that he had a rapidly growing tribe of aspiring bloggers.

Before long, BYP became profitable and Jonathan was no longer known as as the Career Advice Guy, but as the blog expert.

He since sold thousands of his blogging courses, written an incredible book called Your Message Matters and consistently ranks as one of the leading experts in the online marketing space.

A while back, Jonathan wrote something that aptly sums up his journey and contains a powerful lesson for anyone considering the question at hand.

He refers to an old book he’d read called Acres of Diamonds.

The founder of Temple University, Russell Conwell, turned a series of lectures into a book in 1015 and Jonathan writes this on his blog.

The book tells the story of an old man who sold his entire land to go on a quest to find riches and wealth.

He ended up spending all that he had on his quest and came up completely empty.

In a real interesting twist in the story, the man whom he had originally sold his land to uncovered by accident acres and acres of diamonds on the very land that the old man had sold years earlier.

Moral of the story what you are really looking for in life might just be right under your nose or buried deep within.

Could that be true for you?

Could the message you are called to deliver to the world be right under your nose?

Could your true passion and purpose be right there in plain sight?

Or perhaps it’s buried a little deeper.

Take at least a few minutes now, or at the end of this chapter to answer the question what is it that people are always asking me for help with?

If this question doesn’t give you the clarity you need to move forward with your passion and didn’t clarify who you want to help, that’s okay.

I have two more questions for you.

Question two what is it that people tell you is really interesting about you?

Dan Carlin is the host of one of my favorite podcasts, Hardcore History.

I’m a history buff and you spend all day listening to the riveting tales of history heroes of yours.

To give you some perspective on just how popular Dan’s podcast is, when a new episode releases on Apple podcasts, it’s the number one show on the entire platform for at least two full days.

There are more than 850,000 podcasts in existence as of this writing, and Hardcore History tops them all for multiple days each year.

Here’s the crazy part dan Carlin is not a historian.

In fact, he goes out of his way multiple times per episode to remind his listeners of this.

He makes it abundantly clear that he is not the most qualified, at least according to the credentials to be the host of his own show.

So how did Dan end up with the number one history podcast in the world and one of the most popular podcasts on the entire Internet and started with his own fascination with history.

He loved to learn about it, and in particular, he loved the human element of significant world events.

He loved learning about specific soldiers in massive battles within the greater war.

He loved focusing on the details of a specific general or a single event within the context of a larger historical narrative.

In short, he loved the stories.

He loved reading about them and then sharing them around the dinner table.

He’d share a fascinating anecdote about Genghis Khan.

While having coffee with a friend, he’d relay some crazy story he read from a front line troop at the Battle of the Bulge on Thanksgiving Day.

He captivated his family and friends with quotes from the letters of soldiers riding home of the untold real life stories of the hidden heroes throughout history.

And he’d share his opinions about what we can learn from those stories.

And people kept telling him this was fascinating about him.

He had a unique way of making history come alive to his listeners.

At first, his listeners were just family and friends, but eventually he was inspired to start a podcast, and word quickly spread.

I first learned about it in August of 2016 at a Marketing Mastermind from two friends who both repeated what Dan repeats so often throughout each episode.

He’s not a historian, they said, but I’ve learned more from his podcast than I did in all my history classes combined.

Today, millions of people around the globe are learning more about their world.

They have a better understanding of how we got here and how we can avoid the dark and destructive places we’ve been in the past.

They have a better appreciation of the sacrifices and struggles of those who came before us and the lessons we can learn from them all because Dan Carlin listened when people said, that’s really interesting about you.

Take some time now or at the end of this chapter to answer the question what is it that people say is really interesting about me?

If needed, ask your friends and family to help you here by giving their opinions often.

Others are a better judge of what makes you fascinating and interesting than you are now.

Most of our students by now have had a light bulb go off.

They are clear on their passion and purpose and know exactly who they are meant to serve.

If that’s not you, don’t worry.

This last question will give you all the clarity you need.

Question three what did you struggle with but now enjoy success at one of our Start Mastermind members, Alan Thomas woke up on March 2, 2017 at the age of 55 and saw something that terrified him.

The scale read 304 pounds.

Now, Alan knew that he was overweight.

He just didn’t know he was that overweight.

He assumed he weighed £290, but he had officially tipped over into the dark side.

He said what he saw on that scale changed the course of his life.

The day before, he and his wife Angie had celebrated their thirtyfirst wedding anniversary, and as he stood there staring at the number on the scale, three thoughts went through his mind.

One after years spent in the life insurance business serving individuals 65 years and older, he could not recall meeting a single man over the age of 65 who was more than £100 overweight.

This meant that Alan had roughly ten years left to live.

He would probably be known in the future as Angie’s first husband.

Three. Everything he’d hoped to accomplish in the future would be nothing more than a dream.

He’d be too dead to accomplish his dreams.

What Alan did next was remarkable.

He grabbed his cell phone, took a picture, and memorialized that moment forever. 304 pound the scale said.

Alan had always struggled with his weight, he told me.

He had always been the pudgy kid, the husky teenager and the plump adult.

And yet, a few short days after taking that picture, he did something few would dare to do.

He publicly committed to losing 129 pound by the day before

Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2017.

That’s 129 pound in 265 days.

And guess what?

He did it.

In fact, he reached his goal five days early when he weighed in 175 pound on November 17, 2017.

In a matter of eight months, he had conquered decades of obesity.

Along the way, he documented his journey and held himself accountable by posting a picture of his scale every day to Facebook. Why?

Because it just might work, he told me.

Did he have proof of work?

No.

Had he tried and failed countless times in the past?

Yes.

Did he know what diet to do or what exercises he needed to perform?

Nope.

But as he told me, quote, it was never about a diet.

It was always about mindset.

Over those eight months, in the three plus years since, Alan discovered a system that worked for him to lose weight.

Now he coaches other men and women on that process, and his coaching isn’t cheap.

In fact, the average investment made by his coaching clients is well into the thousands of dollars, and they would say it’s worth every penny and more.

He is very clear about who he serves, his avatar, which we’ll explain more about in this chapter.

He works primarily with entrepreneurs, business executives, and others who are high achievers in most areas of life, but who struggle with their weight.

These are people who can afford a larger investment in exchange for a proven system in one on one attention.

His clients are getting results, as you can see, and there are pictures in the physical book.

You should get a copy of it just to see the results that people are getting.

And yet Alan will be the first to tell you that he’s not a medical professional, dietitian, or fitness expert like Dan Carlin.

He doesn’t have letters behind his name, a degree showing his worthiness, or even some specialized training and certification proving that he is, quote unquote, qualified.

He’s just an ordinary guy who struggled with a problem and discovered something that worked for him.

Alan knew he wanted to start an online business of his own, and he was determined to do so.

To find out his passion and purpose, all Alan had to do was ask the question, what did I struggle with but now enjoy success?

At when he answered that single question, the vision for his business became crystal clear.

Today, Alan and his wife, who lost 63 pound of her own, coach men and women on how to transform their bodies.

They live in their dream location by the ocean.

And every time I talk to Alan, I can sense the pride he has for his coaching clients and the thrill he gets from their results.

So what is something you used to struggle with but now enjoy success at did you struggle for years to lead a team, but now you’ve hired and retained dozens of great employees.

And do you geek out on sharing leadership tips and helping others to overcome the same problems you had?

This could be a sign that you’re meant to build a platform around leadership.

Or perhaps you struggled for years to wake up early.

But today you’re consistently awake and alert at 05:30 A.m.

In accomplishing more before the sun comes up than most people accomplish all day, you found a system that worked for you to wake up early and stick to it consistently.

That could be a platform right there.

Maybe you were ready to give up as a parent and felt inadequate and overwhelmed all the time.

But today your family is a model of peace and tranquility.

Perhaps you learned how to invest in the stock market after years of losing money.

Maybe you figured out how to grow a home garden in a dry climate.

After years of frustration, or possibly after years of not speaking up in meetings, you discovered how to come out of your shell and get the recognition you deserve.

These struggles are all examples from our students, clients, and mastermind members, all of which were turned into successes and then turned into world changing platforms.

Take a moment now or at the end of this chapter to consider what you used to struggle with but now enjoy success.

At odds are you probably already know what it is.

The key to clarifying who you help is to be intentional.

You get to choose who you help.

You get to choose who your audience is.

You get to define them in the clearest possible terms.

You get to define who your audience really is and who they aren’t.

As you decide who your audience is, you’ll need to exclude some people.

And I might not feel like the best way to grow your audience or help more people, but it is the best way to help more people is to intentionally attempt to help less people.

This counterintuitive strategy allows you to get absolute clarity on who you serve, and it causes those exact people to gravitate towards you.

If you decide to focus on serving single moms, you need to decide that your content will not particularly help married moms.

If you decide to focus on serving investors over the age of 50, you’ll likely repel investors in their twenty s and thirty s, and that’s good.

If your content is meant for urban gardeners, you won’t attract people with large plots of land or professional farmers.

The key thing to remember here is that if you try to serve everyone, you end up serving no one.

If you try to reach everyone with a muddy, unclear message, you end up reaching no one.

That was my mistake for years, and it cost me big time.

Once I got absolute clarity on who I served and how I served them, my business began to grow.

So that was pages 7 through 20 of my book, turn your Passions into Profits again.
